Santa Anita Park is operating on Saturday with a fairly big card. There are a few notable races at Santa Anita Park, with three stakes races on the agenda. The running of the $200,000 San Marcos (Gr. 2) is the one of two Grade 2 races in the US on Saturday, both of which are at Santa Anita. Along with the San Marcos, there is the $200,000 San Vicente Stakes (Gr. 2), $200,000 Las Virgenes Stakes (Gr. 3), and $100,000 Thunder Road Stakes (Gr. 3). In total, there is nearly a million in prize money available at Santa Anita Park on Saturday. This is the biggest card that you’re going to find today. However, the $250,000 Withers Stakes (Gr. 3) and Sam F. Davis Stakes are worth a bit more than Santa Anita’s biggest race, and comes with points towards the Kentucky Derby. I don’t care for either race, so I’m going to take a pass there.
Santa Anita Park has ten races on the schedule with a total of $983,000 in prize money available. If you are looking for more horse racing picks, consider checking out what we have locked and loaded at Fair Grounds on Saturday. Race 3 – Las Virgenes Stakes
Post Time: 1:03 p.m. PST
Distance:1 Mile
Purse:$200,000
The $200,000 Las Virgenes Stakes is one of two $200,000 stakes races at Santa Anita Park on Saturday afternoon. Kalypso and Moonlight d’Oro are two horses that are best placed on your shortlist. Moonlight d’Oro has finished in the top-3 in all three races to begin her career. She started out placing 2nd behind Roll Up Mo Money by 1 ¼ lengths for a $55,000 purse.
Not a bad effort, but Moonlight d’Oro really came on nicely in her most recent showing. Moonlight d’Oro found the winner’s circle in the third race of her career. She edged out Bob Baffert’s Frosteria by 3 lengths for a $42,000 purse. Moonlight d’Oro drew clear by the top of the stretch, as she held a 2 length advantage on the field. That wasn’t a huge race, but Frosteria is a very strong horse that she cleared with ease.
Kalypso is another Baffert horse that she’ll look to stop today. She is 2 for 5 and has stakes experience working in her favor. Kalypso has finished in the top-2 in four straight performances. In her first win on October 18, Kalypso defeated Queengol by 2 ¼ lengths in the $75,000 Anoakia Stakes. She continues to head in the right direction, and followed up placing 2nd in the $300,000 Scarlet Stakes (Gr. 1) by 1 ½ lengths behind Varda.
In her most recent outing, Kalypso won her first graded event, with a win over Frosteria by 1 ¾ lengths in the $200,000 Santa Ynez Stakes. So, both horses have taken turns beating Frosteria. Kalypso has looked great leading up to today, notably a 5-furlong workout on February 1 with a time of 59.40 seconds. Backing Kalypso here looks like the way to go.
Race 6
Santa Anita Betting Chart For Beginners
Post Time: 2:42 p.m. PST
Distance:1 ⅛ Miles
Purse:$63,000
Race 6 comes with a decent purse of $63,000 for 1 ⅛ miles of racing on the turf. Gregdar and Whisper Not look good in this spot. Gregdar is 2 for 5 in his career, with official results of 2nd, 1st, 4th, 1st, 5th. In his most recent win, Gregdar beat Bench Judge by 2 lengths in a $35,000 event on November 26 at Del Mar.
Santa Anita Racing Today's Program
It was a nice effort, but Gregdar was unable to follow up with a solid performance on January 9. He finished 5th on January 9 in a $63,000 event. More is going to be needed on Saturday, but it’s hard to discount the colt given what he’s done recently in workouts. I would watch Gregdar closely in this outing, with a chance to pull off a small upset.
Whisper Not has been on a nice roll, with four straight performances in the top-3, including a Grade 2 appearance most recently. Overall, Whisper Not is 2 for 7 in his career, and despite losing in his most recent showing, it was a really nice run in the $200,000 Mathis Brothers Mile Stakes (Gr. 2) on December 26. Nobody was beating Smooth Like Strait in that race, but it was a nice try by Whisper Not to show 3rd. A $63,000 race should be more than manageable for Whisper Not.

The San Vicente Stakes (Gr. 2) is the other Grade 2 race at Santa Anita on Saturday. Six runners are scheduled to run in this event. The Chosen Vron and Concert Tour should provide a good account in the stretch. The Chosen Vron is a one-time starter and one-time winner. He beat Big Story by 6 ¾ lengths in a $61,000 assignment on December 27. It was an impressive debut, and that performance earns The Chosen Vron a direct spot in a Grade 2 race immediately thereafter. In a couple of 4-furlong workouts in January, he was clocked at 49.80 and 48.20 seconds.

Concert Tour is a one-time starter and one-time winner as well. He beat Mr. Impossible by 3 ½ lengths in a $61,000 assignment. Concert Tour was up by the ¾ pole and was well clear going into the stretch. He was geared down late or would have easily won by more than 3 ½ lengths. Concert Tour looked excellent in the morning, with a time of 1:00.80 at 5 furlongs and 47.20 seconds at 4 furlongs recently on January 28 and February 2. It’s going to be an entertaining race, with my money backing Concert Tour to get the win.
